“A Spiritual Spring Cleaning”*
On occasion, I’ll step back from the world of interior design, to look through a different pair of lens. As the holidays of Easter and Passover are almost upon us, it would be easy to share tips on how to prepare your homes for entertainment and speak of chocolate bunnies or special dishes, but that would be glossing over the surface.
While going back through some images, I found a photo I took at Kiawah Island, SC, at dawn. Ever the night owl that I am, I still do find the solitude of an early morning to be a wonderful time for reflection and to take heart in the dawn of a new day.
Depending on your personal religious or spiritual beliefs, this time of year bears great significance for many. The message for Christians is of the Resurrection occurring so that one may walk a new way or path of life. Forgiveness for transgressions, or sin, is provided through the ultimate art of sacrifice. For those of the Jewish faith, Passover signifies a liberation or a freeing of burdens. (A great article on “Passover 2010 – Why Pesach Matters” – can be found here.) In both cases, while there may be a difference in doctrines, the ability to “let go” parallels closer than some might think. It’s kind of like a “spiritual spring cleaning”, as referenced by author Bob Deffinbaugh*.
I think it’s comforting to be reminded how each new day brings possibilities. We’re given a choice of how to address our destiny, no matter what circumstance may have preceded it, or what lies before us.
. . . . for Joy cometh in the morning.(excerpt from Psalm 30.5 – ) – Another view of Kiawah.
Thank you for letting me take a little bit of time away from my interior design world. I’ll be in the process of a little spring cleaning of my own.
Blessings to you all! Wanda

The concept of a minimalist lifestyle shows practical, dynamic, concise, effective, and efficient, which is applied in all aspects of life including house building architecture, interior space and exterior gardens.

Minimalist house eliminates a lot of saturation with the use of decorative ornaments, knick-knacks accessories. Character and quality of spaces created by the existence of space defined itself, not by the furniture and accessory knick-knacks in it. Space becomes felt relieved as the primary needs of residents, to optimize the circulation of healthy fresh air, and lighting is abundant sunshine.

Blocking mass, materials, lighting, repetition, circulation compact, multifunctional space optimization and sequential. The value does not rely on the beauty of the house ornaments and artificial objects, but more meaningful to an honest form, function, and the inspiration that spaces are created.
Structuring minimalist home and garden requires a harmonious overall look, a combination of hard materials, the physical structure of buildings and exotic plants, exotic colors, as well as supporting elements (such as: lights, pond, benches, sculptures, furniture). Harmony requires minimal materials, shape, color, and texture with the impression conveyed to the warm, intimate, romantic, natural, or futuristic. Games monochromatic colors with themes such as the gradation of one or two primary colors to create unity between the house and the garden.
Structuring minimalist furniture requires an order, where everything is orderly in their respective position. Room in a house filled with furniture that is very efficient and functional course. Selected furniture that is only really needed, not a decorative element, if possible, so the one multifunction net impressed and relieved. Furniture interior and exterior with geometric forms have a goal of maximizing use of space, there is no room left gaps or dead.
Parks play an important role include the beauty and harmony of nature into the building and together with the surrounding natural environment. The presence of water element in the form of geometric and form pools of water calm, waterfalls, or water spray (fog effect) brings stillness and coolness of the space and audience space.

Maintaining a practical and functional elements of the basic key in minimalist house dressing.

The selection of appropriate materials can thicken to a minimalist concept presented. Eg glass furniture combined with aluminum or wrought iron furniture including the widely used. In addition to a simple form, any maintenance relatively easy to do.
Curtains were able to support the impression you want to display in the room. With a novel type of blind, for example, which are lightweight and able to give the impression that the dynamic in the room is minimalist.

Classic Minimalist House Design At Affordable Prices

This classic American minimalist house design is the end result of intelligent planning, high performance materials, and passive design techniques. Designed on a $ 100,000 dollar budget by Michigan firm Dominick Tringali Architects, the project is set to be a prototype for the next generation of Habitat for Humanity home. Let's take a closer look at the design sketch or his house plans.
Design floor plan home design bothIncluded in the budget is Energy Star windows, external doors, equipment and supplies, while high efficiency furnace and tankless water heaters will all be helpful to keep utility bills low. High performance materials and clear big help, but the savings really begin to add movement through the house a simple design.

Springtime Means “Green” Time
While some parts of the country may still be experiencing a few last wintery, weather events, we have now officially entered into the spring season, or the Vernal Equinox, the transitional period between winter and summer. As the days will become longer and we’ll have more temperate weather, many consumers begin to think about opening up the windows to let in the fresh air, as well as to catch up on spring cleaning and some household maintenance. Interior designers, remodelers, and other trades people know their phones will be ringing!
A lush, green garden. Wouldn’t it be nice for your interior spaces to feel this fresh?
My “dance card” has already begun to be filled with the process of project planning and implementation, for quite a few clients. Almost all of these projects are requiring either a refreshing of painted surfaces, due to lots of “love”, or it’s just time to change up the palette. I do love how paint can transform a room and give it a new lease on life, so to speak. I’m also more aware of how important choosing the right paint product can be. In this day and time of better home insulation products, and where tighter windows and doors allow for less outdoor air exchange, (great for energy efficiency but not so great for holding in toxic fumes), I make every effort to steer clients in the direction of low voc or no voc paints.
Sometimes there is a misperception of less color choices being available in eco-friendly paints. All of the colors of a spring bouquet, and then some, can be customized for your room!
I’ve found a great site, which shares a lot of information about these harmful compounds. Many of you may be familiar with these products, but this site shares an eco-paint primer, (pun intended), on terminology, facts, and sources. If you click on this > Simple Earth Media <, you can see more details.
I’ve always been a big Benjamin Moore fan. Now, their Aura line really has me cheering!
As an interior designer, who likes to create healthy homes, I recognize how the walls, ceilings, and trim work cover a larger surface area than some of the other products I specify. If I can offer guidance, for just one element in green living, it would most definitely be the paint. Even though the initial cost-per-gallon may be off-putting for some consumers, those with allergy issues and asthma will make a few less trips to the doctor. On average, for eco-friendly paints, you could be paying $40-$55 per gallon, as opposed to $23 per gallon for a budget paint. Here is a 2008 comparison on the top four best paints, reviewed by Consumer Search. If you’ll notice, Benjamin Moore’s Aura was number one.
Sherwin Williams has stepped up to the plate with a real winner – Harmony. Their Green Sure designation indicates a paint which minimizes the impact on air quality and maximizes performance.
A slightly lesser known brand, Mythic, was recommended to me by my painters. This non-toxic paint, is minus the VOC’s, which can be off-gassed many years later, and can contain carcinogens. It’s low odor, too!
One more important note - if you are considering a remodeling project, requiring any removal, sanding or disturbing of a painted surface, you will want to check out the latest information in this EPA brochure: “Contractors Lead Safety During Renovations”. As of April 22, 2010, Federal law requires that individuals receive certain information before renovating six square feet or more of painted surfaces in a room for interior projects or more than twenty square feet of painted surfaces for exterior projects in housing, child care facilities and schools built before 1978. They must also provide a copy of this Renovate Right brochure.
Aaaahhh . . . . a green springtime! Don’t you feel like you can breath a little easier?

Important, Details In Minimalist House Design

Infinite Creativity exhibition displays 20 works of the participants Minimalist House Design Competition.
One of the works that could be presented in front of the jury received more attention from the jury on the issue in the design details. Works quite well made. It's just that aspect of detail in a design must be considered.
The footprint of the data, participants cultivate the face of the house in accordance with case studies presented in the competition. The design offered by the last finalist, Agus Indra Didik from Gadjah Mada University is quite interesting.
Balcony on the second floor that can enter and appropriate use, and then sliding door on the first and second floor that is easy to access and out of the owner and the air ventilation is adequate to the added value compared to the other finalists.
Remains a good idea to think about details. Because both of the material details of matter or effective ways of application of ornament in design is important to note. This relates to ease homeowners use what was in his house.
Details are referred to by Sukendro Sukendar related to effective functioning of a device in the house. For example, how to open a sliding door on the second floor balcony to be open. Sukendro better to use some sort of pulley puller tool to open it instead of using a window latch.
Use of the latch is slightly dangerous in this case, users who are not accustomed to suddenly stuck. Once again, safety must also be considered in making a building, especially the home.

Strategy To Build A Minimalist Home Design

Anniversaries, Connections, and Memories
As of this week, I will have shared married life with the same man, for twenty eight years. In “real time”, we will have been together for over thirty years. I remember the exact moment we met. We were both in college and I was in the kitchen of a home owned by a physical therapy professor, who decided to rent rooms to ECU students. (That’s a whole other story . . . maybe I'll share that another day.) While I was chatting with a good friend, we heard someone in the basement level, singing to the top of his lungs, and to the Rolling Stones, no less. We began to giggle, which then turned into raucous, side-splitting laughter, and then my husband-to-be came up the stairs to see who would be so cruel as to critique his vocal prowess. Needless to say, it wouldn’t be the first or last time he would endure such treatment – but always with the best of spirits and intentions!
This is the table I created for “Over The Tabletop” – an event to benefit the Ada Jenkins Center
Fast forwarding, through those years, to the present . . . Just this past week I participated in a tabletop event and the idea was to create something very special, keeping in mind an event you would really L-O-V-E to attend. Whenever I’ve designed a showhouse room, or an entire home, I’ve found it easier to create the space around a fictitious family or scenario, as it gives me a set of parameters – just like a real client. In this case, I had decided to do a sweetheart table for a special couple’s event. It could be for a wedding or an anniversary celebration. The theme was centered around A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, but I must confess, the concept mainly came from a late ‘90’s movie set. I wanted to share visions of sitting in the midst of the forest floor, with fire lights, dragonflies, and the magical sparkling of two lovers’ eyes, as they gazed upon one another.
Hand painted details by Whitney Preslar Bayer, fresh floral scaping by David Wynn of Elizabeth House Flowers, Photography by Chanda.
Just previous to this tabletop gathering, I had quietly celebrated another anniversary, of sorts . . . my first “tweet” and foray into social media. Now before you totally tune me out, if you think Twitter is for the “birds”, or as my husband so fondly says, “It’s a cult thing!”, there is a relevance to this story. Had it not been for that evening, when I decided to find out what Twitter and social media was all about, I’m not sure I would have met Starr Miller. Starr is an interior designer who lives several cities away, albeit in the Charlotte, NC area. Starr and I, along with Maybelline Te, another designer, shared some tweets and after a small while, decided we should meet in person. A breakfast meeting, and several other “tweet-ups” ensued, with Starr joining an interior design organization, of which I belong, and she made an announcement about this event. Maybelline, or “May”, as I so fondly call her, has always captivated me in our conversations, with her wisdom, fearlessness, and generous spirit. When I shared with her about trying to create this special setting, she would have nothing other than to offer to me her custom chairs, which she planned to reveal in an upcoming NYC design show, this May.
This table setting was “touched” by many hands. The Snug Furniture chairs, have been, as well.
Were these connections left up to chance? I’d like to think not. Even in the big sea of chatter, on the web, we were destined to be joined, at first, by our common interests, but more importantly, by uncommon circumstances. I’ve enjoyed sharing the gift of these connections, with the other people in my life. This year has been a most special “anniversary”, as I feel as if I’ve morphed from being the hesitant butterfly, to the one who has burst forth from her cocoon . . . even a little later in life. I’ve enjoyed flitting about, all along the way. After all, when we spread our wings, we get to see so much more of the world and the people in it! This evening was so special, as I was able to share it with “my girls”,some from the past, some from recent meetings, but always who are present.
Special Table Top Connections– (left to right, starting at the top) – Starr Miller, Maybelline Te, Mary Santini, (I’m in the middle), Davetta Moore, Vicki Horton Roach – sister-n-law, Whitney Preslar Bayer – decorative artist, David Wynn – floral artist, and the ever fun Chanda Pope, our photographer, who made us laugh . . . no posing allowed!
And now, back to the beginning . . . Even though my tabletop was meant to be inspired by a story, right out of Shakespeare, I think, in the back of my mind, there would be another pair of sweethearts who would enjoy a magical evening . . . and . . . they did.
The End

A Little Imagination Goes a Long Way
While taking part in some last minute preparations for a table top event, (previously posted below), I was glancing over the Horchow website, where they had focused upon the rising interest in all things tufted. Since I am on a writing time crunch, I’ll share just one observation about tufted furniture, and then I’ll have to return to my ever increasing “to-do” list. (Beautiful design isn’t just smoke and mirrors. It takes a bit of preparation to make everything look easy!)
From Horchow – A fabulous lead-in line: “tuft love – with more dimples than a roomful of toddlers.”
Back to tufting . . . I do love this upholstery application, and I promise to share more about the details in a future post. There are all sorts of methods for applying this skilled and intricate art form. My observations will be more about how the same upholstery frame, treated with different fabrics and room settings, can spin you into so many design directions. This principal also applies to most upholstery, but I think when tufting is suggested, there can be the opinion of it being a bit matronly and starched, and that only certain period fabrics will work.
Here are some great examples of applications, of which even the manufacturers can benefit by changing their covers and photography to showcase fresher, updated looks. I’m not singling out only one vendor. There are many who have lovely showrooms, but older photos on their sites and in their catalogs, might cause a quick click of the mouse or a flip of the page. Before I receive “un-fan” mail, I’m still honoring their beautiful pieces, I’m just showing how they’ve been enhanced through the eyes of a stylist!
A catalog shot from the vendor . . . lovely, but expected?
Same piece, but not your grandmother’s Recamier! The bold, blue solid texture allows the architecture of the design to pop. Adding modern art always switches the gears in a room . . . Fifth speed, anyone?
The same sofa receives a little Italian accent – via this mirrored table. Molto bella!
Another catalog shot. There’s nothing wrong with the use of leather on this Duncan Phyfe style sofa, but . . .
. . . this gray version brings a vision of softness and sophistication. The simple rug and understated trimmings prevent this room from being too “serious”.
If your personality requires a bit more color, this caramel leather warms up the setting, with rays of the Tuscan sun.
Tufting comes in many different forms and fashions. A very modern client allowed me to pop a tufted chair, into her family room. It was covered with a soft metallic leather and accented in silver, nail head trim. I was really surprised she let us stretch her design style, but it’s one of her favorite pieces – and so comfortable, too! (This reminds me of how I need to update my website with new photos. Mmmmm . . . . )
Be sure to stay-tuned for more tufting pics and quips. You never know where my imagination – and keyboard - will travel!
Cheerful wishes for the best week!
Wanda
