Creating “Cool Points” With Antiques

In chatting with a new client, one of the first areas I address is in regards to preferences, be it design style, color, patterns, lifestyle . . . general likes and dislikes.  I do this, even before I make an in-home visit, because they may or may not want to use some of their current possessions and I would rather let the “could-be”, versus the “what-is”, determine the direction of their project.  Now - that’s not to say I overlook any prized possessions.  I’m definitely about repurposing, as it honors items of use and keeps the carbon footprint a bit smaller, while it brings forth the client’s personality.

On the occasion that we are starting from scratch, I do ask about using antiques.  In some cases, there may be a crinkling of the nose, and I can tell the imagination has run amuck to the idea of bringing forth a certain stiffness, in the genre of A Room with a View, or there’s a concern of a cluttered collection of “stuff” arriving across the threshold.  I can almost feel my “cool points” floating out the nearest window.

220px-Ratpack2

The fact of the matter is, I do love working with antiques or vintage pieces, and the reality is, not much in the world of design is truly unique or 100% new.  My vanity doesn’t preclude me from sharing too much about my age. I grew up during the period of Mid-Century Modern, Danish Modern, and George Nakashima

My mother, who did later turn her attention to a more traditional decor, was a modern, young woman of the fifties and early sixties, and joined her peers in outfitting our home with this latest trend.  It was the period when girls swooned over the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, and Sammy Davis, Jr.- just a few of the members of the “Rat Pack”, a group of Hollywood “it” guys.  I remember my mother twirling, in the living room, as their music came from a piece of functional furniture, we called the “Hi-Fi”, carefully chosen to go with the rest of room.

I think I had better go onto some great pictures.  I see my cool points quickly floating out of that afore mentioned window!

A little Mediterranean breeze can almost be felt, blowing through this bedroom.  Walk through any antique mall, and you may see a dark, walnut night chest, in a similar style as above.  Some sanding and a few coats of paint, and you have your own one-of-a-kind treasure!  (Courtesy:  Traditional Homes)

A minimalist approach can often benefit from a little texture.  This table has had plenty of time to achieve the “worn” look.  It’s 16th century.  (Courtesy:  Veranda)

What bungalow banquet wouldn’t benefit from a round table shape?  Easy access in and out.  Easy, breezy upkeep, too, with a metal garden table.  (Courtesy:  Country Living)

While furnishing a home is definitely a personal decision and choice, I do like to open ones thought to the possibility of considering the use of antiques and vintage items.  Aside from having something different from everyone else, they do allow us to recycle and renew.  Antiques often hold their value and may even appreciate, over a period of time.  They add an element of history and a story to share.  And, the thrill of the hunt is ever so fun!

“Cool Cat” Cheers to You!  Wanda

Consumers and Interior Designers: Let’s Chat About Design = #IDzinechat, February 25th @ 8pm EST

I’ll have to admit, upon initially diving into the social media site, Twitter, (and less than a year ago), I couldn’t conceive of how connected our world, (and I do mean world), had become.  The wide array of topics and the number of specialized experts wowed me, and continue to do so, on a daily basis.

trim_hardw_mainWhat has been a most enjoyable experience, is the ability to quickly gain and share information, and have it move through a pool of connections, in almost lightening round fashion.  While tweeting one evening, with several interior designer friends, (about what we thought consumers would want to know about interior design and specific topics), a good friend to several of us, Leslie Carothers - @tkpleslie, suggested having a scheduled Twitter event, or rather, a Design Chat.  I was honored that she nudged me towards hosting the first one.

architect-plans-clip-art(c1a1g3)    goe_intronav09_swap_paint

What’s the purpose for arranging this tweeting of tips?  First, we, the interior designers, aren’t just going to begin randomly spouting out ideas in effort to promote our businesses or services.  We are really interested in engaging with you, the consumer, by finding out what you want to know.  How about that?  Free design advice, based on your needs.  Can you believe it?  We really want to hear your questions so we can provide better and more pertinent information.  We’ll have interior design experts who are well versed in everything from: eco friendly-design, color science, kitchen & bath design, remodeling, new home construction, universal design, furniture & product design, aging-in-place, organization, space planning, home accents, permanent finishes, to window treatment experts, and the list goes on.  What a unique opportunity to share this experience with the design trade and your friends!

green26_Yellow_Springs%20Window%20Fashions_BCT0613_RN110507CB

While pulling this off might seem complicated, it’s actually quite simple.  In Twitter, there is a little tool we refer to as a hashtag.  There is a # sign in front of a phrase or word which makes it easier for readers to track conversations, topics, communities and other events.  In order for consumers and designers to be able to follow our timeline, we created the hashtag, #IDzinechat.  Each day, we’ll be promoting this event, in order to reach a wide audience.  The design chat date and time will continue to be announced, so everyone, both designers and consumers, can plan to be on Twitter, at the same time.  About thirty minutes before the magic hour, I’ll be tweeting for designers to get ready to start answering questions.  At 8pm, it will be announced the event has begun.  (A little tip for all – use #IDzinechat in each of your tweets.  Everyone can follow the questions and answers, more readily.  We may miss you if you don’t use this.)

twitterbirdsSo – keep watching for #IDzinechat.  I’m @WandaSHorton on Twitter.  Interior Designers – come join me.  Consumers – come share with us.  We hope to see you there!  Thursday, February 25th at 8pm, EST.

Tweetfully yours!  Wanda

Please note, the occurrence or promotion of this event provides for no financial compensation for any of the participants.

If Walls Could Talk

As an interior designer, who has been guilty of participating in the “wallpaper removal movement”, I have to say, I have a renewed interest and love of how the latest array of beautiful coverings have made their way back into focus.  There are so many crisp and delightful patterns!  If you took them out of the picture, (literally), such as in the room settings below, the outcome might be a bit blasé.

My expert installer, Steve, will be so pleased to know he can go back to his title of, Steve the Paperhanger, rather than his moniker, of a few recent months ago, “Steve the Paper Stripper”.  (So sorry – sometimes I do have to get past the stuffiness often associated with interior designers!)  It should be known, while some folks are courageous enough to attempt to install their own paper, I heartedly recommend using a local experienced craftsman.  If you are investing in quality goods, why not invest in the best presentation of it?

Talk Topic:  How to add in a large pattern?  Coordinating Color Compliments

If after viewing this lovely display of fabulous walls, you still are nervous about the prospect of adding wall coverings as a design element, let’s talk about it.  Most of my vendors offer the option to purchase large, full-length samples, so you can have a better visual.  If you need to tie in some existing patterns, such as a rug, artwork, or existing fabrics, a bit of assistance will give you the confidence to forge ahead.  This is one of those design decisions which can also offer almost immediate gratification.  In a day or less of installation – viola! – a new room!

If these walls could talk, they would say:  “What are you waiting for?!”

Thanks for the cheery wall chat!  Wanda
